Deadline is reporting that Benicio Del Toro has signed onto Marvel Studios’ upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. The report indicates that Del Toro has been cast in a lead role in the film, although which character he may play is unknown at this time. Additionally, the actor has allegedly signed a multi-picture deal, meaning he will return in future Marvel movies.
Del Toro joins a cast that includes Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Ophelia Lovibond, Lee Pace, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close. James Gunn is set to direct the film.
Part of Marvel Studios’ “Phase Two,” Guardians of the Galaxy features a script from Gunn, Chris McCoy and Nicole Perlman. It follows a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants. The unlikely cast of characters must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions.
