Deadline is reporting that Emily VanCamp has won the role of the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. VanCamp beats out a number of actresses who were announced last fall as making the short list for the role, including Jessica Brown Findlay, Emilia Clarke, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, and Alison Brie. VanCamp was not one of the names mentioned on that list.
VanCamp is best known for her role on ABC television’s Revenge. Which character she would be playing in Captain America is unknown at this time; however, many are speculating that she will play Sharon Carter, the niece of Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell in the first film. Atwell confirmed a few weeks ago that she would not be returning for the sequel.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier will star Chris Evans, reprising his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Anthony Mackie in the role of the Falcon, and Frank Grillo as Crossbones. Rumored to be reprising their roles from Marvel’s The Avengers are Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill. Sebastian Stan and Toby Jones are reprising their roles of James ‘Bucky’ Barnes and Arnim Zola from the first Captain America film. Stan’s character appeared to have been killed in the first film, but the character of ‘Bucky’ Barnes returns in the comic books as The Winter Soldier. Set to be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will hit theaters on April 4, 2014.
