To the disappointment of many fanboys out there, Hayley Atwell has confirmed that she will not reprise her role of Peggy Carter in the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger. It had been rumored for some time that Atwell would return in some capacity for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but she has now told Timeout that she won’t be returning.
“She won’t, she confirms, be back for the latter’s sequel, which moves the action into the present day,” they say.
For the last several months, there have been many rumors about who would be playing the female lead in the film, which is allegedly Sharon Carter, the niece of Peggy Carter. The names rumored to have made the short list for the role are Jessica Brown Findlay, Emilia Clarke, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, and Alison Brie; however, no formal announcement has been made concerning the casting.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier will star Chris Evans, reprising his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America, and Anthony Mackie in the role of the Falcon and Frank Grillo as Crossbones. Rumored to be reprising their roles from Marvel’s The Avengers are Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill. Sebastian Stan is reprising his role of James ‘Bucky’ Barnes from the first Captain America film. Stan’s character appeared to have been killed in the first film, but the character of ‘Bucky’ Barnes returns in the comic books as The Winter Soldier. Set to be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will hit theaters on April 4, 2014.
