Identity Thief with Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy dominated the weekend box office. The Seth Gordon-directed comedy took in nearly $36.6 million while also having an impressive $11,650 per screen average in its opening weekend. Identity Thief easily beat all competition, and has already earned back its $35 million budget in its first week.
Last week’s number one film, Warm Bodies, fell to second place in its second week of release. The romantic horror film, starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, and John Malkovich, still brought in approximately $11.5 million, which is down only 43.5% from last week’s surprising debut.
Steven Soderbergh‘s Side Effects also made its theatrical debut this week, and had strong showing, coming in third for the weekend. The Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum drama made over $10 million, despite opening in nearly 500 fewer theaters than Identity Thief and 400 fewer theaters than Warm Bodies.
Silver Linings Playbook, the film that just won’t go away came in fourth to finish in the top five for the fourth straight week, despite being in its thirteenth week of release. The film continues to perform well since the announcement of the Academy Award nominations a few weeks ago. The Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence romantic dramedy was down only 10.7% from last week’s box office, grossing over $6.9 million.
Rounding out the top five was Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. The action horror film starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton dropped from second place all the way down to fifth place in its third week of release. The film grossed over $5.7 million this weekend to bring its domestic total up to $43.8 million.
Next week, the box office weekend will get an early start with a series of films opening on Thursday, Valentine’s Day. Next week’s films include the fifth Die Hard film, A Good Day To Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis as John McClane; the supernatural love story Beautiful Creatures; the romance film Safe Haven with Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough; and the animated adventure Escape From Planet Earth 3D with the voice talents of Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Jessica Alba. All four films will open in theaters across the country on Thursday and Friday.
