Jim Carrey Won’t Promote Kick-Ass 2 After Sandy Hook Massacre

Jim Carrey says that he cannot support the violence of his upcoming superhero action flick Kick-Ass 2 in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre which began filming last year — a month before the mass shooting in Connecticut that killed 20 children and six adults.

The film is the sequel to 2010’s Kick-Ass being directed by Jeff Wadlow, who is taking over for Matthew Vaughn. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kick-Ass, Chloë Grace Moretz as Hit-Girl, Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as The Mother Fucker.

With the timing of these tweets so close to the film’s release, it’s hard to know if they are of genuine concern (Carrey is reported to be a staunch gun control advocate), or if this is a masterful publicity stunt. A spokesman for Universal declined to comment, and no word on if Carrey will donate his Kick Ass salary to charity.
