‘A Fistful of Dollars’ Movie Summary
Upon his arrival, The Man with No Name quickly recognizes an opportunity to exploit the situation for his own gain. He plays both sides against each other, offering his services as a gunfighter for hire to whoever is willing to pay the highest price. He demonstrates his deadliness to both sides by shooting four gunmen with ease, including three men who insulted him when he arrived in town. He ingratiates himself with both factions, using his cunning and quick-draw skills to manipulate events to his advantage.
As tensions escalate between the Rojos and the Baxters, The Man with No Name becomes increasingly embroiled in the conflict. He forms alliances with key members of both factions, including Marisol (Marianne Koch), the captive lover of the Rojo patriarch, and Silvanito (Pepe Calvo), a sympathetic innkeeper who serves as a guide and confidant.
The Man with No Name witnesses the Rojos massacre a detachment of Mexican soldiers who are escorting a shipment of gold. The Man formulates a plan to steal the gold by taking two of the dead soldier bodies to a nearby cemetery and propping them up to make them appear alive. The Man then sells information to both sides, claiming that the Mexican soldiers survived the attack and know who stole the gold. Each gang sends out a group of gunmen to either capture or kill the soldiers. The gangs arrive at the same time and engage in a gunfight. Ramón ultimately “kills” the soldiers to insure their silence as to his side’s involvement. Ramón’s brother Esteban (Sieghardt Rupp) also captures Antonio Baxter (Bruno Carotenuto), the Sheriff’s son.
When a man with .45 meets a man with a rifle, you said, the man with a pistol’s a dead man. Let’s see if that’s true. Go ahead, load up and shoot. The Man with No Name (Clint Eastwood)
While everyone is busy at the cemetery, The Man with No Name sneaks into the Rojos’ hacienda to look for the gold. During the search, he accidentally knocks out Marisol. Not wanting to leave a witness, the Man takes her back to the Baxters, who arrange to return her to the Rojos in exchange for Antonio. During the hostage exchange, Marisol’ s son and husband, Julio (Daniel Martín), approach her in the street. Ramón orders one of his men to kill Julio, but the gunman is deterred by Silvanito and The Man. The Man orders Marisol to return to Ramon and Julio to take his son home. That night, The Man frees Marisol, killing the guards protecting her. He makes it appear like the Baxters are behind the abduction. The Man gives Marisol money and urges her to leave town immediately with her family.
Ultimately, the Rojos determine that The Man with No Name is behind Marisol’s abduction. They capture him and severely beat him. However, when the guards are looking away, The Man is able to escape. The Rojos believe that the Baxters are behind his liberation, so they set fire to the Baxter hacienda and shoot everyone who tries to escape the flames. The Man escapes town by hiding in a coffin which is snuck out of town by the local coffin maker Piripero (Joe Edgar). The Man spends the next few weeks hiding in an abandoned mine and recuperating.
The Rojos eventually capture and torture Silvanito, believing that he knows the location of The Man with No Name. The Man returns to town. He wears a steel chest plate beneath his poncho to protect himself. Ramón exhausts his ammunition in his rifle trying to kill The Man by shooting him in the chest. The Man shoots Ramón in his hand and kills the rest of the Rojos’ family members nearby. The Man uses his last shot to free Silvanito from the noose around his neck. The Man challenges Ramón to reload his rifle faster than The Man can reload his revolver. The Man wins and kills Ramón. Nearby, Esteban attempts to shoot The Man in the back, but Esteban is shot dead by Silvanito. In the aftermath, The Man says goodbye to Silvanito and rides out of town, leaving behind a trail of destruction and death in his wake.
