‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ Movie Summary

The summary below contains spoilers.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)A year after the events of the first film, Gary “Eggsy” Unwin (Taran Egerton) has settled in as the new Galahad in the Kingsman secret spy organization. Eggsy lives in his late mentor Harry Hart’s (Colin Firth) former house and continues his relationship with Tilde (Hanna Alström), the Crown Princess of Sweden. One night, Eggsy is on his way home from the tailor shop when he is ambushed by Charlie Hesketh (Edward Holcroft) and his henchmen. Charlie is a rejected Kingsman applicant who lost his right arm and vocal cords during the events of the first film. Eggsy successfully avoids the attack by engaging in a battle during a car chase, but Charlie’s severed cybernetic arm hacks into Kingsman servers through the computer in Eggsy’s car.

The information is sent to Poppy Adams (Julianne Moore), the leader of the Golden Circle, the world’s largest drug cartel. A short time later, Poppy uses the information to launch missiles that destroy the Kingsman headquarters and kill all its agents in Britain. Included among the dead are Eggsy’s best friend Roxy (Sophie Cookson) and Eggsy’s friend Brandon (Calvin Demba), who has the misfortune of watching Eggsy’s dog at Eggsy’s house when the missile struck. Fortunately, Eggsy is visiting Tilde in Sweden. The only survivors of the attack are Eggsy and Merlin (Mark Strong).

Eggsy and Merlin follow their training and execute the Doomsday Protocol, an emergency plan that directs them to contact Stateman, the American counterpart of Kingsman. Similar to Kingsman, Statesman hide behind a front of a legitimate Kentucky bourbon whiskey producer and are headed by “Champagne “Champ” (Jeff Bridges). Statesman take in their English brethren and surprise both Eggsy and Merlin when they reveal that Harry is still alive. Tech expert Ginger Ale (Halle Berry) informs them that they arrived on the scene immediately after Harry was shot by Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) and applied life saving techniques to his head wound. However, they inform the Kingsmen that Harry is suffering from amnesia which they theorize will only be cured by reliving a traumatic event.

Champ offers to help the Kingsmen and directs Statesman’s best agent, Tequila (Channing Tatum) to assist. However, Tequila suddenly develops a blue rash and shows signs of mania that requires him to be replaced by another agent, Whiskey (Pedro Pascal). Whiskey and Eggsy head out to investigate the Golden Circle. They start by tracking Charlie’s ex-girlfriend Clara Von Gluckfberg (Poppy Delevingne) to the Glastonbury Festival. Once there, Eggsy seduces Clara in order to plant a tracking device on her. Eggsy feels guilty about it and tells Tilde ahead of time, but it still causes problems with Eggsy’s relationship.

As one of our founding Kingsman once said: This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. Harry Hart (Colin Firth)

Meanwhile, Merlin works to help Harry overcome his amnesia. Merlin takes an exercise out of Kingsman training and floods Harry’s room with water, but the attempt has no success. Once back from Glastonbury, Eggsy threatens to shoot a Cairn Terrier puppy that resembles Harry’s late dog, Mr. Pickle. This causes Harry to relive the final traumatic stage of his training with Kingsman where Harry was ordered to kill a dog he raised. As a result, Harry’s memory returns.

Shortly afterwards, Poppy broadcasts a signal around the world where she announces that she added a toxin to all her drugs. The toxin causes users to develop symptoms like Tequila’s before succumbing to paralysis, and eventually, death. Poppy offers to release the antidote to the world if the President of the United States (Bruce Greenwood) will end the U.S.’s war on drugs and grant her cartel absolute immunity from prosecution. She also reveals that she has kidnapped and infected Elton John (Elton John). Publicly, the President pretends to negotiate. However, he secretly intends to let all those infected die to eliminate all drug users. He orders that all infected individuals quarantine in a football stadium, including his chief of staff (Emily Watson), until they die.

Meanwhile, Harry, Eggsy, and Whiskey track Clara to a Golden Circle facility in the Italian Alps. Eggsy infiltrates the facility and steals a sample of the antidote, but Whiskey destroys the antidote during an attack by the Golden Circle’s henchmen. As a result, Harry becomes suspicious of the American and shoots him in the head. Shocked, Eggsy saves Whiskey using the same Statesman technology used to save Harry previously. As a result, Eggsy believes that Harry’s recovery is incomplete and that he is delusional. At the same time, Charlie destroys the facility and Clara to prevent Eggsy and Harry from obtaining any additional antidote samples. Not long after, Tilde calls Eggsy in a manic state, indicating that she has been infected with the toxin.

Now with a sense of urgency, Harry, Eggsy, and Merlin learn the location of the Poppy’s hideout in Cambodia. The trio fly to the island and attempt to infiltrate Poppy Land. While they are trying to find a way into the base undetected, Eggsy steps on a landmine. With no way to deactivate it, Merlin places his foot onto the pressure pad and pushes Eggsy off. Merlin tells Eggsy and Harry to continue on before singing his favorite John Denver song loudly. Merlin’s actions draw the attention of the guards, who Merlin kills, along with himself, by stepping off the landmine.

With hearts filled with vengeance, Eggsy and Harry storm through Poppy Land killing all the guards that they encounter. Eggsy fights and kills Charlie while Harry destroys Poppy’s killer robot dogs (Bennie and Jet) with the help of Elton John. Eggsy and Harry acquire the laptop controlling Poppy’s drones that can deliver the antidote worldwide. To make Poppy reveal her password, they inject her with a toxin infused heroin. A drugged-out Poppy reveals the password but dies from an accidental overdose. Before they can enter the password, Whiskey arrives. The traitorous Statesman reveals that his pregnant wife was killed by drug users years before and that is why he wants all drug users to die. The three men fight, and Eggsy and Harry are victorious after they drop Whiskey into Poppy’s meat grinder. They use the password and activate the delivery of the antidote across the world with the drones.

In the aftermath, the President is impeached and arrested for his willingness to let the drug users die. Statesman purchase a distillery in Scotland to help rebuild Kingsman. Ginger Ale is promoted to the new title of Whiskey in Stateman, and Tequila joins Kingsman at their rebuilt tailor shop in London. Additionally, Eggsy and Tilde reunite and marry.
