‘Pulp Fiction’ Movie Summary

The summary below contains spoilers.
Pulp FictionFilmmaking forever changed the day the postmodern black comedy, Pulp Fiction, graced theaters. Essentially, the film is comprised of six independent stories; loosely connected to one another.

The film begins in a diner where Pumpkin and Honey Bunny eat breakfast while they plan there next robbery. They decide the diner is the perfect place for a robbery, and proceed to attempt to rob it. Following the credits, Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield, discuss international fast food while on the way to a hit.

Once arriving at their destination, they encounter their targets, Brett and his accomplices. Jules engages Brett in a discussion over Big Kahuna burger and the gender of Marsellus Wallace. Eventually, Jules and Vincent get what they came for, a mysterious briefcase which contains a beautiful, but unknown substance. After getting what they came for, Jules engages in a bible recital. Then, he and Vincent kills Brett in cold blood; thus ending the first chapter of Pulp Fiction.

Chapter 2

Chapter 2 begins with Marcellus Wallace lecturing Butch Coolidge. The two have an agreement where Butch will take a dive in his next fight. Vincent and Jules soon enter the bar, now dressed in T-shirts and shorts, to deliver the briefcase to Marsellus.

We then jump to the next day where Vincent buys high-grade heroin from Lance and his wife Jody. He shoots up, and then drives over to Marsellus’ house to pick up his boss’ wife, Mia Wallace. Marsellus has asked Vincent to take out his wife. They go to Jack Rabbit Slim, a 1950’s themed restaurant populated by celebrity impersonators who act as a wait staff. The two eat, drink, and dance the night away. Then, they then had back to Mia’s house, where Mia soon overdoses on Vincent’s high-grade heroin.

Fearing the wrath of his boss, Vincent takes Mia back to Lance’s to seek his assistance. Lance tells Vincent that he has to give a shot of adrenaline to Mia’s heart, or she will die. Vincent plunges the outrageously big needle into Mia’s chest; shocking her back to life. Soon after, he takes Mia back home, and the two agree that this story will stay a secret. As Mia enters the house, Vincent blows her a kiss, thankful that they are both still alive.

Chapter 3

Chapter 3 begins with a flashback of Butch when he was young. Butch is visited by Vietnam veteran and friend of Butch’s father, Captain Koons. Koons explains the history of a gold watch that belonged to Butch’s deceased father; including what both Butch’s father and Koons went through to bring the watch back to Butch. A ring’s bell interrupts the flashback, and the now adult Butch heads out for his fixed match.

However, Butch does not throw the fight as he should. He ends up killing the other fighter, and jumps out a window to avoid Marsellus and his goons. Butch jumps into a cab driven by the mysterious, and death obsessed, Esmarelda Villalobos. Butch tells her what he has done while she drives him back to his hotel room. There, Butch’s girlfriend, Fabienna, waits for him. After engaging in oral pleasures, and getting a good night sleep, Butch and Fabienna prepare to leave town. However, Butch realizes that his beautiful tulip has forgotten his father’s gold watch. He tells her that he has to go back for it, even though it may mean his life.

Butch sneaks back into his apartment, and grabs his watch. As he eats a Pop Tart, he notices a heavy duty machine pistol equipped with a silencer. He hears his toilet flush and sees Vincent, sans Jules, emerge from Butch’s bathroom with his mandatory reading material. Butch shoots and kills Vincent and then quickly leaves the apartment. Thinking that he has made good on his get away, Butch encounters Marsellus at a crosswalk. Butch runs Marsellus down with his Honda, but you can’t kill the devil that easily. Marsellus gets up and begins firing at Butch, chasing him down the street. Eventually, Butch and Marsellus enter the strangest Pawn Shop in L.A., where Maynard captures both of them.

Once they regain consciousness, they find that Maynard invited his friends Zed and the Gimp over for a party. Zed and Maynard take Marsellus into a backroom, and proceed to sodomize him on a pommel horse. Butch gets free, but doesn’t leave. He returns “Kill Bill” style, and makes short work of Maynard with a samurai sword. Marsellus soon regains his composure and shoots Zed in the groin with a shotgun. Marsellus and Butch are now even. So, Butch takes Zed’s Chopper, and leaves Los Angeles with Fabienna; never to return.

Chapter 4

Chapter 4 begins in a back bedroom of Brett’s apartment from Chapter 1. We see another man in the Brett’s apartment, armed with a large handgun listening to the demise of Brett. The unnamed man comes out, and empties his gun at Vincent and Jules; missing them with every shot. The hit men quickly kill their assailant, but Jules is disturbed by his near death experience. After gathering their inside man with Brett, Marvin, the three drive off and debate the “miracle” that they just experienced.

During the debate, Vincent accidentally shoots Marvin in the face; causing them to hide their car at the home of Jules’ friend, Jimmie. Jimmie is none-to-pleased that he has a dead body in his garage. In fact, he orders them to get the body out of his house before his wife, Bonnie, gets home. Marsellus dispatches the Wolf to take charge of the situation. The Wolf arrives, and quickly gets the situation under control; removing the body, and cleaning up the hit men in the process.

Vincent and Jules, now dressed in their T-shirts and shorts, head off to get breakfast at a diner; the very same diner from the beginning of the film. While Vincent is in the bathroom, Honey Bunny and Pumpkin rob the restaurant. Jules puts a gun to Pumpkin’s head, and the couple reconsider the robbery. Reprising his pseudo-biblical passage, Jules expresses his ambivalence about his life of crime.

For his first act of redemption, he allows the two robbers to take the stolen cash and leave. The film ends with Vincent and Jules tucking their guns into their shorts; heading off into the sunset towards their dates with destiny.
