The summary contains spoilers.
The Rise of Skywalker (2019)The Rise of Skywalker begins one year after the Battle of Crait. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) has discovered a Sith wayfinder device, and uses it to head over to the planet Exegol, a secret Sith planet. Once there, he discovers Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) still alive, and still in control of everything, but he’s now physically a shell of his former self.

Palpatine reveals he created Snoke as a diversionary tactic, and to also lure Kylo to the dark side. During his time away from the limelight, Palpatine secretly built another armada of Star Destroyers. Now that everything is proceeding as he’s foreseen, he orders Kylo to track down Rey (Daisy Ridley)—who’s off completing her Jedi training with Kylo’s mom, General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher)—and kill her.

Meanwhile, Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) have learned all about Kylo’s discovery from information given to them from an unknown First Order spy. Once Rey discovers Palpatine’s alive, she finds Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill)’s notes on the Sith artifact he left in the Jedi texts, including where Luke’s trail went cold on the planet Passanna. Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca, BB-8, and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) head out to Passsanna to see if they can succeed where Luke failed. R2-D2 stays behind with Leia who’s becoming more and more frail.

Once on Passanna, the group meets Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams). Lando tells them that Leia asked for him to help them since he also helped Luke years before in the search. He informs the younger group where he and Luke’s search left off years before. Unfortunately, Kylo uses his Force bond with Rey to find her location, and heads to Passanna with his Knights of Ren in tow.

The Sith assassin on Passanna

By now, Rey and the others have found the remains of a Sith assassin at his ship. When Rey spots a dagger inscribed with Sith text, she asks C-3PO to translate it, but his programming forbids him from doing so.

As Kylo arrives on the planet, Rey senses his presence, and she heads out to confront him. While this takes place, the First Order captures Chewbacca, who has the dagger, and seizes the Millennium Falcon. Rey attempts to save Chewie, but her Force lightening accidentally destroys a First Order transport. As she and the rest of the group escape on the assassin’s ship, they assume Chewbacca died in the transport’s explosion.

With Chewie and the dagger gone, Poe suggests they head to Kijimi where they can extract the Sith text from C-3PO’s memory. However, to retrieve the information from C-3PO, they have to do a factory reset and wipe the droid’s memory. Reluctantly, C-3PO agrees. Meanwhile, the First Order arrives on Kijimi looking for the star warriors. Rey senses that Chewbacca is still alive and is being held on Kylo’s Star Destroyer in orbit, and the group goes to rescue him.

Kylo is still out looking for Rey as she and the others get the help of Poe’s old friend, Zorii Bliss (Keri Russell), to sneak into his Star Destroyer. Using their Force bond, Kylo tells Rey that Palpatine is her grandfather, and he ordered her killed as a child from the fear of her power.

The Dark side is strong with Rey

Once Rey recovers the dagger, she has visions of the assassin using it to kill her parents. Soon General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) discovers the group onboard, and he reveals himself to be the unknown First Order spy. When he allows them to escape on the Falcon, the First Order realizes he’s the traitor, and they quickly execute him for treason. The Star Destroyer then destroys Kijimi using a Death Star type cannon.

Now, the group follows coordinates to Endor in hopes of finding a wayfinder device that will reveal a way to travel safely to Palpatine’s location. There, they encounter a woman named Jannah (Naomi Ackie), a former stormtrooper like Finn, who promises to help the group to remains of the second Death Star out in the stormy ocean. Unwilling to wait, Rey goes it alone and travels to the Death Star remains. Once she possesses the wayfinder, Rey has a vision of herself as a Sith lord, and begins to understand her potential destiny.

Once again, Kylo tracks the group to Endor, and destroys the wayfinder before dueling Rey. Back home, a dying Leia calls out to Kylo through the Force—distracting him during a crucial moment in his battle with Rey which enables Rey to impale Kylo with his own lightsaber.

Sensing Leia’s death, Rey heals Kylo to save him. She tells Kylo that she wanted to take his hand and join him during the events of The Last Jedi, but with Ben’s hand, and not Kylo’s. Only now does she begin to come to terms with her Sith heritage, and she takes Kylo’s ship to exile herself on Ahch-To.

Rey must confront her destiny

However, Luke’s Force spirit appears to her, and encourages her to confront Palpatine as he did with Darth Vader. He gives her Leia’s lightsaber and his old X-wing to assist her. Rey leaves for Exegol, using the wayfinder from the remains of Kylo’s ship.

As this goes on, Kylo has a force vision of his own of his father Han Solo (Harrison Ford). After a brief conversation, Kylo throws down his lightsaber, and embraces the light side of the Force once again as Ben Solo.

The final battle begins

Once Rey arrives on Exegol, she transmits her location to the Resistance, and then heads over to confront Palpatine. Palpatine demands she strike him down so his spirit can transfer to hers.

The Resistance arrives to battle Palpatine’s secret armada. Ben’s there, and he takes out the Knights of Ren before helping Rey. Palpatine takes this opportunity to absorb Rey and Ben’s life essence—thus rejuvenating himself.

He then uses Force lightening to attack the Resistance fleet. When it looks as if Rey’s about to lose all hope, she hears the voices of past Jedi lending her their strength. Suddenly, Palpatine attacks her with lightning, but she deflects it using the two lightsabers—killing him dead. Rey too dies from the attack, but Ben uses the Force to sacrifice himself to bring her back to life. The two kiss as Ben becomes one with the Force.

In the sky above, Lando leads the Resistance with some newly arrived reinforcements. Together, they destroy the remainder of Palpatine’s armada.

With victory in hand, the galaxy once again celebrates. Rey visits the Lars homestead on Tatooine to bury the two Skywalker lightsabers now that she’s built one of her own. As Luke and Leia’s Force ghosts look on, a local shows up. When he asks her name, she replies, “Rey Skywalker,” taking the name of her surrogate parents.
