‘True Lies’ Movie Summary
As the story unfolds, Harry returns home late from his previous assignment and seeks to make amends with Helen for his tardiness. Unfortunately, he overhears Helen talking to someone and becomes increasingly suspicious of Helen’s behavior. Harry begins to suspect Helen is having an affair with a used car salesperson named Simon (Bill Paxton).
Determined to uncover the truth, Harry uses his resources as a spy to surveil Helen, leading to a series of comedic misunderstandings and mistaken identities. Ultimately, Harry discovers that Helen feels that her life has become mundane, and she is looking for a little excitement. Harry, along with his trusted partner, Gib (Tom Arnold), decide to create a ruse where they make Helen believe that she is a covert agent, forced to work for a spy agency.
At the same time, Harry is assigned to track down and apprehend a group of international terrorists led by the ruthless Salim Abu Aziz (Art Malik). The terrorists have obtained stolen nuclear warheads through an art dealer who trades on the illegal market named Juno Skinner (Tia Carrere). The terrorists are planning to unleash them on American soil, posing a grave threat to national security. In pursuit of the terrorists, Harry enlists the help Gib and the rest of his covert team to embark on a globe-trotting adventure filled with thrilling action sequences and narrow escapes. Along the way, Harry employs his formidable combat skills and resourcefulness to outmaneuver the terrorists and prevent their deadly scheme from coming to fruition.
Well, you see, this is the problem with terrorists. They’re really inconsiderate when it comes to people’s schedules. Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger)
As the mission unfolds, Harry’s personal and professional lives collide in unexpected ways. In one of the side missions that Harry gives to Helen for her excitement, Helen and Harry are kidnapped by Juno and Salim. The terrorists fly the captured Taskers to their secret base in the Florida Keys. The terrorists use Harry to identify the nuclear weapon to give their threats to the United States legitimacy. Salim orders Harry to be interrogated and tortured. However, Harry flips the tables and uses the opportunity to orchestrate his and Helen’s escape. However, Harry’s actions ultimately reveal that he is a spy and has been lying to Helen for years. Helen is not pleased with the discovery.
Unfortunately, during the escape, Helen is recaptured by Juno and placed into limousine. Meanwhile, Salim goes to Miami, where he has hidden the kidnapped Dana with some of his forces. Gib and the rest of Harry’s team catch up with him as he is stranded in the Florida Keys with a buried nuclear bomb. They use a helicopter to catch up to and save Helen from Juno’s limousine. Harry is assisted by the United States military who destroy part of a bridge to take out some of the other terrorists.
Harry learns that Salim has his daughter in Miami with the second nuclear bomb. Harry “borrows” a Harrier jet to fly to Miami and save his daughter. Harry uses the jet to take out most of the terrorists. Dana steals the bomb’s ignition key from Salim who chases her onto Harry’s jet as it is still flying. Harry kills Salim when the terrorist becomes entangled with a missile that Harry fires at a helicopter full of terrorists. Harry lands the plane and is secreted away with his daughter to reunite privately with Helen.
In a heartfelt conclusion several months later, Harry and Helen now work as a covert team together. They have reaffirmed their love for each other and vow to be more open and honest in their marriage, embracing the “true lies” that have defined their relationship. As they reconcile their differences and embrace their shared experiences, Harry and Helen emerge stronger than ever, ready to face whatever challenges the future may hold. In the closing scenes of the movie, they are on a mission where they encounter Simon again who is still trying to use the spy angle to pick up women. The film ends with Harry and Helen tangoing the night away while on assignment.
