Wreck-it Ralph (2012)

Wreck-it Ralph Movie Review by Chris Haley

Wreck-It Ralph by Disney Animation Studios brings to life generations of video game heroes, villains, and princesses in one family-friendly movie. The main character, Ralph (John C. Reilly), who shares the same name as the video game he’s stuck in, is a villain with a heart of gold. For thirty years, he has played the foil to Fix-It Felix Jr. in a game that’s a cross between “Rampage” and “Donkey Kong.”

Ralph is sad and lonely, sleeping at night on a garbage pile while the town’s citizen’s party in the building before him. He goes to a support group filled with cameos of villains from your favorite games of yore. The big oaf finally decides the only way to prove to Fix-It Felix he’s a good guy after all is by getting a medal by any means, and bringing it back home as a hero.

While Wreck-it Ralph has a basic plot that has been explored countless times before, Disney builds a vivid world with detailed environments around a story line that draws you in. The movie is a bit slow at times, especially in the middle, but it builds in to witty and enjoyable end. The film is marked by excellent voice performances by the cast – especially from Sarah Silverman and Jane Lynch, who steal the show.

Wreck-it Ralph has enough humor and charm to keep the entire family entertained, and is one of the best video game themed movies to come out in some time.

Wreck-it Ralph, directed by Rich Moore and starring John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, and Jane Lynch gets 3 1/2 stars out of 5.
